Research and planning: Double page spread analysis

This is a double page spread from a pop magazine. You can tell because the article is on a famous pop star who won a TV talent competition. The audience would be mainly female aged between 16-18. I think this because the model is female, some of the text is pink (a colour popular in pop magazines) and the article mentions a TV show popular with that age category. The model has quite heavy eye makeup and is wearing a sparkly, very short dress. The eye makeup is quite dramatic and the short dress looks flirty. This shows the models personality and the fact the dress is silver and shiny makes it look very expensive, so she looks wealthy. The article is an interview but has been done as an exclusive so it doesn't have the interview questions featured. Instead it is the pop star sharing her life story/experiences. Certain parts of the text stand out and are in different colours, mainly these are quotes/extracts from the article designed to stand out and catch the readers attention. There are 3 columns of text split into paragraphs. The masthead of the article is bigger and in a different colour. It is also next to the image of the pop star so we know it's about her. The image is a medium long shot that has been taken at eye level. This is to show that we are on the same level as her, she recently won a TV talent competition so the media is trying to send a message that you can be just like her.

Research and Planning: Music mag contents page evaluation

The genre of this magazine is pop. You can tell because of the genre of the bands featured and because the small masthead in the corner says 'we love pop'. The target audience of the magazine is females 16-18 years old. You can tell because of the ages of some of the people featured in the magazine, the colour scheme and the fonts styles (bright colours, bold filled in letters, colours popular with that age range/gender). The models in the center of the contents page are smiling so they are happy and they are wearing fancy, posh dresses so you can tell they are rich. They look very relaxed and natural. They also stand out because one model is wearing all white and the other is wearing all black, this is all contrasts with the models races which are both different. Other than the main article being about both of them, I think they're together on the contents page to show diversity and to make the magazine appeal to a wider range of people. The contents page has a long column made up of one paragraph (a note from the editor), 3 cover stories at the side including 3 images and page numbers (3 of the main magazines articles) and an elongated column at the bottom containing the actual contents (page numbers/details). The main article is featured in the middle of the page to catch the eye, it has a very large image, a caption and a large page number. The magazine has roughly 62 pages. The main image is a medium two shot. This is to show that the two models are friends and very close, it also partially shows off their outfits which are important as the magazine has a section on fashion and it shows their wealth/status.

Research and Planning: Masthead designs

These are my designs for my music magazine masthead. The genre of my magazine will probably be pop as it makes up the majority of what I listen to. I haven't decided on a name yet so I just wrote masthead. I have used 3 different fonts, colours and techniques. I have added a shadow, attempted to create an inner glow (design 2- it doesn't appear to have worked) and applied embossing.  I like the effects on the 1st and 3rd designs, I like the 2nd designs colour and I like all the fonts. The last font is quite hard to read.

Research and Planning: Music magazine analysis

Magazine 1- We Love Pop.
The genre of the magazine is obvious as the word 'Pop' is part of the masthead and the cover has images of pop singers on it. You can tell that the target audience is females 11-18 years of age because it features bright colours popular with that age range, advertisement for clothes/films etc aimed at that gender and age, and it features lots of artists who are popular with that age group. The layout is easy to read as the cover lines are big enough to read, but don't over crowd the page. Some lines are at different angles to make them stand out as more important. The magazine has a medium shot (from the waist up) photograph on it and several smaller ones (close ups, two shots). The model on the front (Rihanna) looks happy as she is smiling, this makes her seem friendly and encourages people to want to read/buy the magazine. The majority of the cover is pink which makes Rihannas vibrant red hair stand out and works well with it. She isn't wearing a lot of makeup but that is because there is already a lot going on in the photo and it would just be too much. She's wearing a simple dress that is very revealing in places and is decorated with colourful jewels. Combine that with her hair colour and the image is very busy. The dress shows that she is flirty and rich because of the jewels and holes. Her hair colour makes her seem fun, playful and fiery.

Magazine 2- Q
The genre of the magazine isn't very obvious but if you take the time to read all the cover lines you can see that this magazine covers almost everything. It has alternative music, rock, pop, R&B etc. It is a magazine that will suit anyone. Because of this the target audience can be anyone from 13-50 even. The layout is simple and easy to read. The picture is the main focus of the cover and has the cover lines framing it. The masthead is big and noticeable, the cover lines standout against the background. The picture is of a medium close up (just below shoulders upwards). The model on the front (Florence Welsh) isn't smiling but she's not unhappy. Her face looks quite blank/neutral, but because of her dramatic makeup and pose she looks very mysterious and edgy, this suits the genre of magazine and her genre of music. Her hair is a sort of auburn colour that makes the red of the logo stand out, aswell as making her hair seem an even richer colour. The blue eyeshadow makes her eyes pop and stand out against her pale skin. This reflects her own personality as she stands out from other artists with her dress sense and music style.
