Research and Planning: music magazine photos- contents page

These are the photos I have taken for my music magazine contents page. I will choose the best/my favourite to go on my magazine.

Research and planning: music magazine photos- cover+double page spread

These are all the photos I took of my model for my cover and double page spread. I will pick the best/my favourite photos to actually use on my magazine.

Research and planning: CD covers

These are examples of different types of cd covers. I will use these to inspire my own cd cover for my music magazine.

Each CD has a photo of the artist on the front. I will either have my artist on the front or a field of lavender since my artists stage name is 'Lavender Mister'.

Research and planning: Music magazine Costumes

This will be my models outfit for my cover page, it consists of a black lace dress, a gold preplum jacket, a brown fascinator and a pair of black high heels.
This will be my models outfit for my double page spread. It consists of a black and white lacy 1920's dress, black high heels and black rose headband.

Research and planning: Double page spread examples

This is an example of a 'story' double page spread. It uses quotes from the artist featured in it to give an account of (in this artists case) her breakthrough into America. This type of double page spread is good as it allows for more detail and a more personal/one off account directly from the artist, but the draw back is it is a lot harder to read. It takes time to read and that can be a problem for the magazines readers. Some may have difficulty reading huge blocks of text (dyslexia etc) and other may not have the patience to finish it/ get bored reading it.

This is an example of an 'introduction to artist' Q+A double page spread. It features a less popular/ unheard of band who are answering a selection of random questions that cover topics such as; romance, style, hygiene, fame, brain and 'bits and bobs'. These types of questions are good as they are designed so the reader can find out as much information about the new artists in a short space of time/writing space. This style of spread is very popular in pop magazines as their target audience (teenagers etc) will be able to read it quickly and pick out specific parts of the interview.

This is an example of a double page spread 'single review'. The article is analysing Rihanna's latest single, Rihanna is a popular artist so she is the main feature of the article. This type of double page spread is good because it has a short but detailed critique of her new single, so the reader will be able to form an opinion of if they like the song or if they think it would be worth listening to. The article also features a side story also about the reviews artist (Rihanna). It is a photographic account of the different hair styles she has had over the course of her career. It will also mention the years she had these styles and possibly which videos they feature in, this is good for reminding the reader about her past songs so they will go and re-listen to them as well as her new single.

This is an example of a double page spread 'interview'. This is an article on Lady Gaga, it has the interviewer questions and her responses written down. This is good as it makes the reader feel involved. Also it has slightly less detail than a 'story' but is a lot easier/quicker to read, but has more detail than the 'intro to artist/ Q+A' and only takes a little bit longer to read. It's the middle ground of the articles. It's broke down into sections so its easier to find specific bits of text and if the reader loses their place they can find it with ease.

This is the double spread example of a 'diary' interview. It is an article describing the day in the life of a celebrity etc. This format is good as it allows for a lot of detail in a short space. The text usually follows a timeline, this makes the reader feel involved in with the celebrities and gives them an insight into their lives.

Research and planning: Makeup Testing

These are some shots of makeup testing I did to see what look my model will have.
 Look 1
 Look 2
 Look 3
 Look 4
Look 5

My genre is pop/alternative. My 'pop star' will have to look the part.
Look 1- Bright colours, suitable for genre, a simple look. Plain but very vivid. Block patches of colour in keeping with some current popstars looks.
Look 2- Theatrical and very dramatic. Very over the top like Lady Gaga. Pastey features, dark mysterious eyes and rosy cheeks.
Look 3- Simple but not effective. The pattern on the lips cant be seen and you can barely make out the pattern on the eyes. The colours have come out very dull.
Look 4- Hollywood glamour, my model may be wearing 40's styled clothing so this will work well. Elegant simple eyes and shocking red sultry lipstick.
Look 5- The wacky unusual look. Green eyeliner framing the eyes with swirls and dots. Metallic lipstick adds a futurist element.

Research and planning: Potential model headshots

Model number 1:-
  • female, 23 years old, brunette, thin
This model is the right gender, age and size. She looks sort of pop like here, but often dresses more fashionable and modern (fitting into the pop genre). She also looks quite alternative which is part of genre. She is roughly the right age but can and often does look younger. She is very pretty and I will probably use her on my magazine.

She has already done modelling and will be available.

Model number 2:-

  • female, 16 years old, blonde, thin

This model is the right gender and size, but she is a little bit too young. However she could be made up to look older. Her look is very modern and trendy. It is simple but bold (colour and style). She fits into the pop genre well, she is also pretty. I will consider her for my magazine.

Model number 3:-
  • female, 17 years old, brunette, curvy/thin
This model is a better age than model 2 and dresses older, so is perfect age wise. However she looks and dresses like a rock star (with dark clothes and makeup). She has messy rocker hair. She would probably be willing to dress up and be put in makeup but probably wont want to/ be able to model for me. I will not include her in my magazine.

Model number 4:-
  • female, 16 years old, brunette, curvy
This model isn't the right age for my magazine. She doesn't look like a stereotypical pop star, but would fit more into the 'alternative' side of my genre. She doesn't often dress up but can do and is willing to have her make up and hair done for the photo. She would be available but due to her lack of pop factor I will keep her as a reserve option.

Model number 5:-
  • male, 16 years old, blonde
This model DEFINITELY isn't right for my magazine. The majority of responses from my questionnaire said they wanted a FEMALE cover person. This person also wouldn't be willing to dress up or be put in makeup. They may be willing to take part. They don't look particularly pop star like so I will not use them.
