Research and Planning: Music magazine analysis

Magazine 1- We Love Pop.
The genre of the magazine is obvious as the word 'Pop' is part of the masthead and the cover has images of pop singers on it. You can tell that the target audience is females 11-18 years of age because it features bright colours popular with that age range, advertisement for clothes/films etc aimed at that gender and age, and it features lots of artists who are popular with that age group. The layout is easy to read as the cover lines are big enough to read, but don't over crowd the page. Some lines are at different angles to make them stand out as more important. The magazine has a medium shot (from the waist up) photograph on it and several smaller ones (close ups, two shots). The model on the front (Rihanna) looks happy as she is smiling, this makes her seem friendly and encourages people to want to read/buy the magazine. The majority of the cover is pink which makes Rihannas vibrant red hair stand out and works well with it. She isn't wearing a lot of makeup but that is because there is already a lot going on in the photo and it would just be too much. She's wearing a simple dress that is very revealing in places and is decorated with colourful jewels. Combine that with her hair colour and the image is very busy. The dress shows that she is flirty and rich because of the jewels and holes. Her hair colour makes her seem fun, playful and fiery.

Magazine 2- Q
The genre of the magazine isn't very obvious but if you take the time to read all the cover lines you can see that this magazine covers almost everything. It has alternative music, rock, pop, R&B etc. It is a magazine that will suit anyone. Because of this the target audience can be anyone from 13-50 even. The layout is simple and easy to read. The picture is the main focus of the cover and has the cover lines framing it. The masthead is big and noticeable, the cover lines standout against the background. The picture is of a medium close up (just below shoulders upwards). The model on the front (Florence Welsh) isn't smiling but she's not unhappy. Her face looks quite blank/neutral, but because of her dramatic makeup and pose she looks very mysterious and edgy, this suits the genre of magazine and her genre of music. Her hair is a sort of auburn colour that makes the red of the logo stand out, aswell as making her hair seem an even richer colour. The blue eyeshadow makes her eyes pop and stand out against her pale skin. This reflects her own personality as she stands out from other artists with her dress sense and music style.
